On January 14th, 2023, we officially launched our impact initiative, Rootcode Foundation, with the aim of empowering underprivileged children with technology education. Our core mission is to develop the IT and tech capabilities of lesser privileged schools across the country and spark their interest in technology so that they have the chance to pursue higher education and relevant careers in the technology industry in the future. We believe this is a timely initiative, and we hope to upskill and bridge the rising divide in the talent market and contribute to Sri Lanka’s drive to become a sought-after tech hub regionally and globally. I know that learning technology has changed my life entirely. And not only my life, my family's life and possibly a generation as well. But not everyone in our country gets the same opportunities, resources, or exposure. Through Rootcode Foundation, all of us at Rootcode are going to help underprivileged students in Sri Lanka learn technology and change their lives.
Real change takes time, so we plan to commit one whole year to a school and its children, holding half-day training every two weeks to teach them many areas of technology relevant to their age group. Our 100+ Rootcoders have embarked on a journey to help these students learn technology in an effective and enjoyable way. We are also providing scholarship opportunities to students and also build them a sustainable IT infrastructure, including a computer lab and the associated facilities.
So, what happens after we complete a year filled with learning? We don’t plan to stop. We will continue to back the school and its children, and through our teacher training and mentorship program, we are going to continue to educate teachers on technology and assist them in crafting their lessons
Initially, our Foundation team evaluated about 40 schools and then selected the Sri Siddhartha Kanishta Vidyalaya in Horana, as our first project. The school has about 85+ students from grades one to eleven. We had a soft opening ceremony together with all the students, teachers, parents, and Rootcoders. This school is special, not only because of its students and teachers, but also because we saw how curious they are to learn new things, and are ever-ready to spend a weekend learning technology with our Rootcoders every now and then.
The first project was initiated at the Sri Siddhartha Kanishta Vidyalaya in Horana on 14th January in the presence of teachers, students, and Rootcoders. During the opening ceremony, the school principal, Mr. M.H.L.Chathuranga spoke to the audience about the importance of technology education for the children and the future of the country. The principal praised the efforts of Rootcode in setting up the foundation and praised the company's commitment to empowering underprivileged children. The Zonal Education Director - J.D.L.V.K. Jasinghe also spoke about how Rootcode’s initiative is different from most ordinary CSR activities that he has witnessed, and wholeheartedly encouraged the students to make the most of the opportunities that the foundation provides.
We believe that the launch of Rootcode Foundation was a great success, and we are hoping to start the school visits from the 18th of February onwards. Seeing the energy and enthusiasm of these kids keeps us going, and we can’t wait to see them change their life with technology education.
Wish our team luck!
